Movie poster design for the Paul Thomas Anderson movie, Boogie Nights. As part of a project for my Semiotics class I was asked to design a movie poster using key elements from the movie. Semiotics is the study of signs and symbols and how they are interpreted. So through this poster I wanted to capture the story and mood of the movie using a simple design. Boogie Nights tells a story about the changes occurring from the 70s to the 80s. Specifically with film in the porn industry. The bubble gum pink background, combined with the Cooper Black title takes us back to the 70s where everything was a party. But the point of focus, the film strip, gives the viewer a more sullen and defeated feeling. The downwards pointed, loose outline of a penis represents the change of the porn industry in the 80s and how it begins to fall apart and lose its substance.
